It's crazy that your school year is about to end in a couple weeks!
**DUE WED. 4/29/2020: Stock Photo Posture Assignment ** 1. Search up "Violin Stock photo", "Viola Stock photo", "Cello stock photo", "Bass Stock photo" on the internet. **Remember, it has to be school appropriate** 2. Pick a stock photo based on your instrument (so for example, if you play cello, pick cello). It can be funny looking, if you want. 3. Upload that photo (either save and upload the photo, or provide a link to it, or copy and paste it on a word document). 4. Describe what you see wrong with the person's posture, and then create solutions for all the posture problems you see, based on what we have talked about with posture. ** Think about: backs, shoulders, left and right arms, hands, wrists, chin/jaw/neck placement for violins/violas, bow holds, feet (stance), etc. Can't wait to see what funny ones you pick out! Here is an example of a stock photo.

** DUE WEDNESDAY 4/22** HOW TO LISTEN TO CLASSICAL MUSIC
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iJrI-PXYA_MIf you can't access YouTube, see if you can access the video with this link: https://safeYouTube.net/w/wty6 If the videos DO NOT WORK, please use this article to help answer the questions to the best of your ability: https://www.nytimes.com/2018/08/02/arts/music/classical-music-guide.html Watch the YouTube video, “How to Listen to Classical Music: General Ideas,” from Inside The Score, and answer the following questions. ** You can write the answers on a separate document and upload it, or write the answers in the text box when you submit it (Again, I don't know what it looks like on your end) ** According to the author, what are 5 things one can do to become a better listener of classical music? 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. How is listening to classical music different than listening to pop music? Answer: What are some of the benefits of knowing how to listen to classical music? Answer: Does this video make you more or less likely to spend time actively listening to classical music? Answer: ** DUE FRIDAY 4/24** ELEMENTS OF MUSIC In music, we have many different elements of music, that is: the things that make up music (How we hear music, read music, and feel music). There are up to 12 different "elements" of music, but most musicians and music teachers mainly discuss 6 to 7 of them. They are: 1. Dynamics 2. Form 3. Rhythm 4. Pitch 5. Timbre (pronounced "tam-ber") 6. Texture In class, you have probably heard at least one of these elements being discussed when we are playing the music. Here are some links and examples to help you understand the elements of music. https://www.artslive.com/courses/elements-of-music/ https://www.liveabout.com/the-elements-of-music-2455913 https://www.musictheoryacademy.com/how-to-read-sheet-music/the-elements-of-music/ Assignment: ** First, IN YOUR OWN WORDS, DESCRIBE the 6 elements of music I have listed above. ** Second, pick your favorite song. Discuss 1 of the elements as it relates to your song. **For instance (This is just an example).... I choose Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. The form is the melody, and then melody repeats again, but with a different ending. That means that the melody is first heard in the first part (twinkle twinkle little star, how I wonder what you are, up above the world so high, like a diamond in the sky). The second time you hear the melody, the ending is different because the notes change and go down. ** Another example is Rhythm. Talk about what what different types of rhythm you hear: dotted rhythms, half notes, slurred notes, accented notes, etc. ** Another example is Timbre. What types of instruments do they use to create certain sounds or effects? Like, some artists will use beatboxing to simulate drums/percussion. Or, they use a string instrument over a brass instrument to create a soft sound. ** Another example is Texture. How many layers are in the song? Some artists like to create multiple layers to create an effect of having lots of singers on their song, or to create a loud hype atmosphere. They do this by combining different types of instrument sounds. ** Another example is Pitch. Did the artist use high, low, or both high and low sounds? Hello All! I want to clarify the schedule for each week.
HMS Virtual Learning Daily Schedule MONDAY & WEDNESDAY: CHORUS/BAND/ORC..12:40-1:25 PM * I will not hold live/face-to-face class meetings on Zoom or any other video platforms. * Lessons are visual, either through videos or articles (since many students do not have their instruments at home). * Use this time to complete assignments for orchestra, and ask questions if you need help. I will do my best to help. ~~ I will be grading assignments as you turn them in (email, VERGE, VERGE message, Remind, etc.). I WILL NOT penalize for late work, so just try to turn in your work when you can. I will check up every week on those who have missed a submission. Don't worry- you are not in trouble, just a check-in ~~ ~~ IF YOU DO NOT HAVE YOUR INSTRUMENT FOR THE PLAYING CHECKS, THERE ARE ALTERNATE ASSIGNMENTS LISTED IN THE DIRECTIONS OF THE PLAYING CHECKS, or if you need different accommodations, please email me, and we will discuss it. ~~ MY EMAIL IS : [email protected] FRIDAYS : * No mandatory video conferencing. * Reserved for students to complete work * Reserved for students and parents to ask questions or individually address concerns via VERGE or email. * If you need a parent conference, email me, and we can set up a time to video conference. (AVAILABLE BETWEEN 9:00AM-2:00PM). IMPORTANT DATES: *May 15, 2020 – Last day for students to submit final assignments/Last Day of School I hope everyone is staying safe and healthy, and doing well! This has been a crazy semester! You all may have seen the new schedule sent out by the principal. I want to clarify our lessons with this new schedule. The new schedule states that Orchestra will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays, with an hour block of lesson time. All teachers have the option to hold a video conference (Zoom, Google Hangout, etc.) face-to-face lesson with the students at that class block time. Or, they have the option to give lessons and assignments through VERGE with no video conferencing. I am choosing to NOT DO the video conferencing at that block of time on Mondays and Wednesdays, and continue giving lessons and assignments through VERGE, so students can work on their own pace. However, students are encouraged and advised to work on their orchestra assignments at those designated times.
