Hello 8th Grade Students and Parents!
I am excited for you to have this opportunity to play with the high school students! Here are a few reminders for Monday 10/28: 1. Attire: ANY Henderson MS Orchestra T-shirt, jeans (can be any color--- please NO leggings, tights, sweats, etc. Follow HMS dress code!), sneakers, and 1 Halloween accessory (CANNOT be a mask, or anything that covers up your HMS shirt). You can either wear it to school, or bring it with you to change into. 2. Make sure you have your instrument at school! - Cellos--- if you are bringing your own instrument, please drop it off in the morning. PLEASE HAVE A WAY TO BRING YOUR SCHOOL CELLO BACK TO SCHOOL ON TUESDAY MORNING. - Basses--- We will have basses for you to use at Lakeside. - Violins/Violas---- We will have time to grab our instrument in the classroom before loading the bus. PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR NAME IS LABELED ON THE INSTRUMENT. 3. Make sure you ALL have your own copies of the music, and YOU KEEP TRACK OF IT. 4. We will have "dinner" around 3:40pm, so if you know you will be hungry later, please bring something extra to eat. 5. Please be on your best behavior. Remember-- you are not only representing me and HMS, but also yourself. Please act maturely. 6. 1:00pm: Meet in the orchestra room and start getting things ready 1:30pm: Load the buses. - Bus rosters will be given out to the teacher helpers-- they will take roll, and double check the bus before getting off. 1:45pm: Arrive at Lakeside HS, and a LHS Orchestra student will greet us, and take us into the Fine Arts building. 7. Chaperones will meet in the Fine Arts Building, and Ms. Tang will be arriving there shortly (since she will be driving herself). CONCERT ENDS AT 7:00PM--- PICK-UP FROM LAKESIDE IS AT 7:00PM!! - ** OCT. 28 CONCERT PICK-UP TIME: CONCERT ENDS AT 7:00PM!! PLEASE PICK UP AT THAT TIME!! *** - We will work on a concert reflection worksheet on Tuesday as a self/group evaluation of our performance. This is will be turned in at the end of class for a formal grade. - We are continuing to rehearse our holiday music selections. 7th Grade - We are continuing to rehearse our holiday music selections. 6th Grade - We are reviewing musical terms, concepts, and techniques continuously (note values, counting, reading music, use of 4th fingers on violins and violas, repeats, 1st/2nd endings). - We will start applying and reviewing these concepts in the Essential Elements 2000 Book 1, up to page 25. - We are learning the difference between Melody and Harmony by playing separate notes and parts from one another or from each instrument section. This will prepare us to to play orchestral arrangements for the holiday concert. - We will learn the G string notes on the violin, viola, and cello, and compare this knowledge to the notes on the D string and D Major Scale. (EE pg. 26) Reminders: - Honor Orchestra participants: Morning rehearsal is Thursday, 10/31. Congratulations to these All-State participants for passing the first round! You all sounded great this past Saturday, and I have been hearing great feedback from all the judges. The second round will be held at the Martha Ellen Stillwell School of the Arts in Jonesboro on Saturday, January 11, 2020! I will keep you all posted about the second round excerpts.

Otherwise, you cannot go!** - We are continuing to work on Legends of Glory and Hanging Tree for the Oct. 28th Concert. - We are continuing to rehearse our holiday music selections. 7th Grade - We are continuing to rehearse our holiday music selections. 6th Grade - We are reviewing musical terms, concepts, and techniques continuously (note values, counting, reading music, use of 4th fingers on violins and violas, repeats, 1st/2nd endings). - We will start applying and reviewing these concepts in the Essential Elements 2000 Book 1, up to page 25. - ** Playing Check on these concepts (FRIDAY 10/18/19)** - EE pg. 21, #76 For Pete's Sake (2/4 time, eighth notes, 1st/2nd endings, counting and rests) - EE pg. 22, #81 Michael Row the Boat Ashore (4/4 time, repeats, 1st/2nd endings, half notes, half rests, 4th finger usage for violins and violas) Reminders: - Honor Orchestra participants: First Morning rehearsal is Thursday, 10/17. - All-State Orchestra participants: You have the opportunity and option to play your scales and excerpts in front of the class this week for feedback and performance practice. 7th Grade - Dance of the Tumblers: This piece is a fast and lively piece that will challenge the students to think ahead with string crossings and playing at a fast tempo. - Trepak: Another holiday favorite from The Nutcracker. This is a fast and exciting piece with the use of some sixteenth notes in the first violins. - Bell Carol Rock: This is a rock-style take on the traditional Ukrainian Bell Carol. Students are challenged with the introduction of syncopated rhythms. - *** I have decided NOT to take the 7th grade students to the Large Group Performance Evaluation (LGPE) in February due to their behavior as a whole. There is another opportunity to go next year, and I hope we can do it. We are still going to perform the LGPE music we have rehearsed, and more information will be given about it at a later date. *** 6th Grade - We are working our way through the Essential Elements 2000, Book 1, up to page 23. - We have covered terms and concepts such as quarter notes, half notes, eighth notes, quarter rests, half rests, eighth rests, repeat signs, 1st/2nd endings, arco, pizzicato, up/down bows, clapping and counting aloud, shadow bow, posture, bow hold, reading clefs and note names on D and A strings (G string for Basses), Tempo markings (Allegro, Andante, Moderato). - We will be working on using 4th fingers for violins and Violas. Week 10 is here, and we are closer to Fall Break and Fall weather (... hopefully)!
8th Grade We have received the new holiday music. We are playing the following: - Jingle Jazz: This incorporates elements of syncopated rhythms and slight dissonance, which are elements of jazz. - Christmas Cello-bration: This piece showcases the cello section, allowing the students to explore shifting into 4th position, as well as extension finger patterns. - Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy: We are still waiting on this piece to arrive, so we will work on it later. - A Charlie Brown Christmas: This is a classic favorite that many people have heard before, and it does include syncopated and an ostinato rhythm. This piece will be a big challenge, especially with the introduction of swing rhythm, trills, grace notes, and more. - We are continuing the rehearsal of Legends of Glory and The Hanging Tree for the October 28th Concert. *** Please turn in the permission forms ASAP *** **** CONCERT ATTIRE: ANY HMS Orchestra T-shirt and jeans with sneakers. 1 Halloween Accessory is allowed (such as a bracelet, earrings, necklace, etc..... but the HMS orchestra shirt and FACE has to be VISIBLE. As of now, you should have gotten your music and have started practicing! This will take much time on your own part to practice and learn the music before Saturday, November 9th. Here are the morning rehearsal dates to rehearse as a group. Please try to make it. If you do not go, then it is up to you to learn the music well.
